Post 22 The floorboards

Wednesday, 4 May 2022
Whilst we were building the log cabin, our floorboard planks, which we stacked in 2020 and 2021 continued drying.

We were aware that we needed to get our ducks in a row for processing our planks into floorboards. I had heard of a sawmill in the Baviaans valley near Bedford and rang up Nick Basson, the owner, to enquire about tongue and grooving about 120 square meters of planks. When Nick heard about our log cabin project he was very enthusiastic and keen to assist, even more so when he heard that we were using poplar timber. He is passionate about poplar and has been in the business of processing poplar timber for many tears.

With much anticipation we took the covers off our stacks of wood and laid the planks out ready for despatching them to Bedford. We were very pleased with how the planks had dried and how they kept their shape.

We had come to a wonderful arrangement with Jaco, the owner of BuildIt in Bedford, who delivered the pine timber and OSB boards, to load our planks onto his empty truck and deliver them to Nic on his way back to Bedford. Thank you Jaco! The Baviaans valley road is quite treacherous in places and we were delighted that we had a truck to deliver our load.
